This is to welcome everyone to the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management platform. Infact my department is very delighted to be on platform. By the way of history, Industrial and Personnel Relations Programme (MIPR) as a Unit under the Department of Sociology was established in 1982 with the previous name, Masters in Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR). The Unit was one of the few producing higher degrees in the area of industrial relations and human resource management in Nigerian Universities. The Unit has, for several years, been reputed for the training of high caliber human resources who work in organisations and industries in Nigeria.
Vision
The vision of the department is to:
- be a foremost Department of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management (HRM) through world class teaching, learning and research.
- train qualified individuals in the essentials of Employment Relations and HRM for the
advancement of the society.
- to produce employment relations and human resource experts that would impact the profession positively both in theory and practice, by serving as ER and HRM specialists and professionals in the public and private sectors, as well as those who may wish to acquire higher degrees in the discipline.
Mission
- To equip the graduates with the requisite skill for conducting evidence-based research in employment relations and human resource management relevant to Nigerian industries.
- To train graduates to acquire the capacity to identify and deal with employment relations and human resource management issues and challenges.
Philosophy of the Department
The broad philosophy of training in Employment Relations and Human Resource Management is to:
- produce graduates with sufficient management skill and knowledge who will play leadership roles in the training and practice of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management.
- produce post-graduate students who can function independently or in collaboration with others in Employment Relations and Human Resource Management teaching and satisfy internationally recognisable standards.
- provide sound professional Employment Relations and Human Resource Management background who would be capable of working in Nigerian work organisations and internationally.
- produce graduates who are well trained that will advance the course of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management both in theory and practice.
Philosophy of the Programmes
The philosophy of the Programmes is to provide basic and remedial training in ER & HRM for the purpose of preparing students for higher studies as well as for managerial positions in the private and public sectors of the economy.
Objectives of the Programme
The objectives of the programmes are to:
- develop the competencies of students in understanding the basic principles and concepts in ER & HRM and utilising them in practice; and
- equip students with basic knowledge and techniques of managerial problem-solving and decision-making relevant to both the private and public sector organisations.
