History

This is to welcome everyone to the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management platform. Infact my department is very delighted to be on platform. By the way of history, Industrial and Personnel Relations Programme (MIPR) as a Unit under the Department of Sociology was established in 1982 with the previous name, Masters in Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR). The Unit was one of the few producing higher degrees in the area of industrial relations and human resource management in Nigerian Universities. The Unit has, for several years, been reputed for the training of high caliber human resources who work in organisations and industries in Nigeria.

In 2017, the University of Ibadan entered into a collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN) in which graduates of the Professional arm of Programme will have automatic Graduate Membership Certificate of the highly esteemed professional body. Part of the terms of the collaboration was the establishment of a Department of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management in the Faculty of the Social Sciences. As a result of the need to be in tune with the realities in the contemporary world and in order to equip students more in the areas of employment relations and human resource management, the curriculum of the Programme was reviewed in 2019, resulting in the creation of five Programmes and approved by the Senate of the University. Thereafter, a proposal was made for the establishment of the Department of Employment Relations & Human Resource Management (ER&HRM) to be carved out from the Department of Sociology. The proposal went through the Departmental Committee, the Faculty Postgraduate Committee, the Postgraduate Committee, and finally the Development Committee of the Senate and was eventually approved by the Senate of the University at its meeting of 27 May 2024 via Senate Paper No. 7028.
