I am very pleased to welcome staff and students of the Faculty to the current academic session. In particular, we are most excited at inducting our fresh students into the new and exciting experience that characterises membership of Faculty of the Social Sciences in Nigeria’s premier University. It has often been noted that we strive for excellence in scholarship and leadership, which is a tradition that was bequeathed to us by our Founding Fathers. We have remained in the place of honour and dignity, for which we rank high, among social science faculties in the West African sub-region.
Our commitment to expanding the frontiers of knowledge, innovation and transformation through cutting-edge research and strategic partnerships has remained unshaken through ages. Our mission is to remain globally recognised for distinction in driving positive change and for the high reflective content and practical applicability of our research. Our work is not only of critical scientific merit, but also relevant for policy development and improvement of the quality of life of society members who are impacted by it.
You are indeed coming to this great institution, and our Faculty in particular, with lofty aspirations that are surely attainable with diligence and determination. Be rest assured that the Dean, Heads of Departments and the entire staff of the Faculty will provide that enabling environment necessary to support your dreams and the quest for success. We are duty-bound to mould the future leaders of this great nation, and the world at large, to reflect soundness both in character and learning. We apply ourselves, fully, to one of the verses in the University of Ibadan Anthem that encourages us all to ‘help enshrine the right to learn; for a mind that knows is a mind that’s free’. I am quite confident that you will attain such freedom that finds expression in integrity, insight, hard work and equity during and upon the completion of your studies.
As you would soon discover, in the course of your sojourn with us, the Faculty of the Social Sciences at Ibadan is unique in several ways. On behalf of staff and students, I once again warmly welcome and wish you a fulfilled stay here, with excellent memories that would last a lifetime. God bless you all, and may He bless the Faculty of the Social Sciences.
