UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

FACULTY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES LIBRARY

PREAMBLE

The decentralization of the University of Ibadan Library System is meant to facilitate better service delivery to the Library users. This informs the decision of the University Library Management to establish branch Libraries in various places within the University environment. The branch Libraries include: College, Faculties, Institutes as well as Centre Libraries.

The Faculty of the Social Sciences Library was established in 1972 as four (4) departmental collections in five rooms maintained by the Departments. The Library now occupies virtually the entire top floor of wing “C” of the Faculty building complex. It has a floor space of 256,412 square metres which houses the reading room with a good number of steel shelves; stocked with books, the reading room with chairs and table, the E-Library as well as the Faculty Librarian’s office. The Library caters for the reading, teaching and research interest of students, teachers and researchers. It has a reading capacity of 112 users. It now serves the six Departments in the Faculty namely, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Geography and Department of Urban & Regional Planning. It is one of the largest of its type on the main University campus and it is very functional. It is not, however, designed as a substitute for, but a complement to, the Kenneth Dike Library (the main Library of the Ibadan University Library system).

It is worthy of note to state that in recent times, the Faculty Library has just undergone a massive renovation/revitalization courtesy the CARTA (Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa) in conjunction with the Faculty of the Social Sciences Management under the dynamic leadership of the Dean in person of Prof A.S. Jegede. This timely intervention has therefore transformed the entire library to a world class standard and put the library in the fore front of information service delivery.

Through this general renovation and revitalization of the Faculty Library, an e-library section was carved out. The renovation also touched every aspect of the Library operation, thereby making the Library a conducive environment with adequate lighting, cool temperature, good reading spaces, ambience and internet readiness. The book and non-book materials are now more accessible than ever before. It is therefore not an exaggeration to say that the Faculty of the Social Sciences Library is now a knowledge hub to behold.

CIRCULATION/RESERVE AREA

This is the first area users would visit in an attempt to make use of the Library. It is very close to the entry/exit point of the library. Registration of users and all other necessary transaction or library routine is being carried out in this section. As a matter of fact, the circulation section of the Library can be described as the service centre where all users' query and information needs are attended to. The library does not loan books to students. All books could only be consulted within the Library and returned to the staff at the circulation desk.

GENERAL READING ROOM

This is basically meant for the reading and research interest of the undergraduate, postgraduate and staff of the Faculty. External users are also allowed access with the provision of reference letters or letters of recommendation. The general reading room contains reading tables and chairs. The general reading room has the reading capacity of one hundred and twelve users at a given time. The general reading room also houses shelves containing open access materials as well as reserved materials including journals, projects of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as reference resources.
